Cool On The Ben

Thursday, 26 November 2009

To celebrate the publication of the SMT's magnificently updated Ben Nevis history, here's a fascinating glance into the past, an eight-minute film of John Cunnigham climbing on Ben Nevis. At least, I assume it's the Ben, because there's no indication of which route this is and I'm still figuring it out. If you can spot it immediately, let me know. On the evidence of this, Cunningham was a very neat climber. The film was shot for National Geographic by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, hardcore climber and all-round environmental good guy. All that a rather groovy movie too. Bastard. You get the impression he was a Steve McQueen fan. The movie appears on the Paul Cunningham channel on YouTube, which has some other rather nifty films from the past as well.
