You may not have heard of the Intelligence Squared (IQ2) series of lectures on topical issues, but they get heavyweight intellectual types to talk about issues of the day and draw top-notch audiences too. Now IQ2 are doing an evening at the Royal Geographical Society all about the appeal of mountains. The line-up includes host Stephen Venables, who made the first British ascent without oxygen, 1953 Everest veteran George Band, the first British woman up Everest, Rebecca Stephens, the first Englishman up Everest, Doug Scott, the most successful British Everest guide, Kenton Cool and, drum roll, Andy Kirkpatrick. Presumably he's been invited to do the Everest jokes. The event takes place on 15 June.
